Moving Out: What to Do Before You Hand Over the Keys

A little preparation before move-out makes the process faster, protects your security deposit, and helps you avoid unexpected charges. Here's your checklist.

Give Written Notice

Provide PPM with written notice of your intent to vacate per the timeframe in your lease (typically 60 days). You can do this by email or through your tenant portal. Without proper notice, you may be liable for additional rent.

Schedule Your Walk-Through

Contact us at least 2 weeks before your move-out date to schedule the inspection. We strongly recommend being present. See Move-Out Walk-Through and Security Deposit Refunds for what to expect.

Clean Thoroughly

The unit must be returned in clean condition. This includes:

  • All rooms vacuumed/mopped and wiped down

  • Appliances cleaned inside and out (oven, refrigerator, microwave)

  • Bathrooms scrubbed

  • Cabinets emptied and wiped

  • All trash removed from inside and outside the unit

If the unit is not left clean, cleaning costs will be deducted from your security deposit.

Address Minor Repairs

Patch small nail holes, replace any missing hardware, and ensure all fixtures and appliances are in working order. Damage beyond normal wear and tear will be charged.

Remove All Belongings

Everything must be out of the unit before you hand over your keys. Abandoned items will be disposed of and the cost charged to your account.

Return Your Keys

Return all keys, fobs, and access cards to PPM on your last day. Unreturned keys may result in a lock re-key charge.

Provide a Forwarding Address

Give PPM your forwarding address so your security deposit (or itemized statement) can be sent to the correct location within 30 days as required by NJ law.
